UK government on Monday imposed their strictest travel curbs on India after constantly rising number of coronavirus cases there. The decision came an hour after Prime Minister Boris Johnson called off his trip to New Delhi. Secretary of Health Matt Hancock confirmed the move in the House of Commons as almost 103 cases of the so-called Indian variant had been just identified in the UK, out of which the vast majority have been linked to the international travel. Samples of that variant have been analyzed to check whether the new variant has any concerning characteristics, such as greater transmissibility or resistance to vaccines. He added in his statement that India is being added to Britain’s “red list” of countries, with all arrivals from India will be banned except for UK or Irish nationals, who will need to stay in a government-approved quarantine hotel for 10 days when they return. The British and Indian governments on Monday stated that by analyzing the current COVID-19 situation, PM of UK cannot Travel to India next week as planned and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will plan to meet in person later this year. This highly expected, long-planned trip was going to be Johnson’s first foreign visit since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic a year ago. This trip was originally scheduled for January but postponed when infection raised in Britain. Almost 273,810 new infections have been reported in India on Monday, which is probably the highest recorded rise since the start of the pandemic. Over 15 million infections cases have been reported in India, which is only second to the United States. The Health Ministry of India has also reported over 1,619 deaths from COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, pushing the overall numbers over 178,769. India is now being the fourth-highest in terms of the number of deaths after the U.S., Brazil and Mexico, but has a much larger population.
